HISTORY OF WINDROSE

"The details are not the details.
They make the design"

- Charles Eames -

Beginning 47 years ago, my father, Robert S. "Bob" Lewis began his search for a premier sporting dog.  In the lakelands of Michigan, Mr. Lewis sought to find a dog that had intelligence, drive, beauty and heart.  Bob Lewis always had an attraction to the unique.  He bred, raised, showed and participated in performance events with Arabian horses for over 50 years.  To solve his extreme desire to find the perfect canine companion and hunting dog, his search led him to the Flat-Coated Retriever.

Mr. Lewis was an avid hunter, at one time holding licenses in seven states.  The family's Centennial farm in Howell, Michigan provided opportunities galore for a bird dog.  Pheasant were Mr. Lewis's bird of choice to hunt and the Flat-Coat was the perfect fit.  Geese and duck were also in abundance and he and his hunting companions rarely missed a day to be in the field during the season.

He purchased his first Flat-Coated Retriever from Sally Terroux in 1973.  His connection with the breed was immediate and lasted over the next 28 years until he passed away.  In 1976, Mr. Lewis brought another Flat-Coated Retriever into his life from Karen and Anthony Szostak.  When speaking with Helen Szostak in 2010 at the National Specialty, she informed me about that particular litter and said it was the first litter to carry the Grousmoor name.  From those early years, Mr. Lewis was never without a black, feathery, hard-driven, beautiful Flat-Coated Retriever by his side!  Sadly, Robert Lewis passed away in 2001 leaving his beloved Flat-Coats to his daughter, Linda Gruver of Loveland, Colorado.  As we knew the end was nearing, his first priority was to make sure the dogs were well taken care of and that his legacy with them would continue.

Since 2001, the legacy and bloodlines have been passed on through a continued strict seletion of the finest Flat-Coated Retrievers.  They continue to show, work, play and thrive here in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
